Photography
from the
street up.

Pavement Photos is a photography collective rooted in the documentary and street traditions. Urban, wild, social, environmental — unposed, unglamorous.

We notice what's being ignored, point at what's uncomfortable. We give space to the people, places, and organisations doing necessary work. We are on the side of people over profit, place over development, the overlooked over the celebrated.

Our aim is to document the world we live in and explain it through our images.

The
Story.

Pavement Photos doesn't exist yet in the way it will. Right now it is one person, a set of values, and an open invitation. This is the notice on the door.

The goal is a platform for serious documentary photography — exhibitions, publications, and commissioned work for organisations whose values align with ours. A place where photographers can find peers, develop practice, and get their work seen.

We will be a cooperative of photographers who go out into the world with a camera and come back with something true. We will share work, challenge each other, and operate on the Magnum model: members own their photographs, decisions are made collectively, and the work always comes first.

We are based in Perth. We meet monthly. We are just getting started.

The
Values.

  • 01 Truth We point our cameras at the world as it is, not as power would have it seen. The camera is a tool of accountability.
  • 02 Community We work from the ground up. Our subject is everyday life — people, place, community, the living world.
  • 03 Solidarity We act collectively, share equitably, and stand with the people and places we photograph. Their story belongs to them.
  • 04 Stewardship We treat the natural world as something to protect, not extract from. That shows in the commissions we take and the ones we refuse.
  • 05 Openness We are inclusive regardless of background, identity, or means. Membership is earned through the work and the values, nothing else.

Member Principles.

  • 01 The collective will not accept commissions that conflict with its values.
  • 02 Members retain full copyright and ownership of all work at all times.
  • 03 Decisions affecting the collective are made by consensus among active members.
  • 04 New members are invited by existing members based on quality and ethos of work.
  • 05 Any commercial income is distributed transparently and agreed collectively.

Monthly Meetup

Ideally, we will meet once a month in Perth. A projector, some pints, and honest conversation about photography and the work we're making. Attendance at monthly meetings is open to anyone with a genuine interest in the documentary and street traditions.

Membership is selective rather than open. Prospective members show work and are invited in by existing members. This is how we maintain a shared standard and a coherent collective voice.
